From Bhavani, with love - Looms that whisper heritage!

In South Indian households, Jamakkalam is more than a floor covering; it is a symbol of emotion, tradition, and auspiciousness. Gone are those days when every family function meant a jamakkalam on the floor and hours of post-lunch gossip with everyone around.

With multicoloured yarns woven into horizontal stripe patterns, jamakkalam from Bhavani (a town in Erode District, Tamil Nadu) has been a staple item in most households in Tamil Nadu for generations.

From Bhavani with love celebrates the traditional craft of weaving those multicoloured yarns that are slowly disappearing.

Synopsis:

Little Sumi’s grandfather gets the opportunity to weave a Jamakkalam for the temple goddess, and the entire family feels elated.

Still, when thatha’s age-related discomfort restricts his work, Sumi has to find a way to help him out. She brings in some other weavers to help her Thatha. When only a quarter of the weaving is left, the loom gets stuck, leaving the jamakkalam incomplete. How they all find a way to complete the full jamakkalam and whether their goddess Kaveri Amman takes her first step on the jamakkalam after coming out of her shrine during the thiruvizha is the rest of the story.

Written as a tribute to the Jamakkalam weavers of Tamil Nadu, this book, From Bhavani with Love, by Lakshmi V and illustrated by Zainab Tambawalla, is a multicoloured masterpiece and is a must-have in your bookshelf.
